Workshops for professional dancers

Nine dance companies are set to spend a good month touring through Switzerland. An opportunity for the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps to create synergies: On days on which there are no performances, the dancers will give their Swiss colleagues insights into their work during masterclasses and training sessions. These workshops offer dance professionals based in Switzerland the opportunity to exchange ideas with other dancers and to learn about their choreographic work processes and movement vocabularies. Several of the organised workshops are inclusive and will be held for dancers with or without disabilities, offering participants a different approach to physicality. The masterclasses are open to professional dancers, the workshops also welcome experienced dancers.

All workshops and masterclasses are organised in collaboration with local interest groups and theatres, studios and schools from the region.

COCOONDANCE: ÁLVARO ESTEBAN LOPEZ

In this workshop, Álvaro Esteban López will enable you to explore tools and qualities of movement based on spine movements. Building up on those body qualities, you will then play with movement in relation to others and the space. The tasks used in this workshop originated from the creative process of the piece RUNThrough. The description of movement is one of the working methods of the company, who developed a glossary to share their choreographic language. Álvaro studied at the Royal Conservatory of Dance in Madrid. He also has a Bachelor in Sports Science and Physical Activities. He currently works as a dancer and movement creator for CocoonDance, whilst also touring internationally with his own work.

(LA)HORDE AVEC LE BALLET NATIONAL DE MARSEILLE: DOVYDAS STRIMAITIS

(LA)HORDE AVEC LE BALLET NATIONAL DE MARSEILLE: DOVYDAS STRIMAITIS

Originally from Lithuania, Dovydas Strimaitis completed his training at "Codarts", Rotterdam. He worked under the direction of Jitti Chope as part of the "18 Monkeys Dance Theatre" (Bangkok, Thailand) and Marina Mascare at the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Sweden. In 2019, Dovydas joined the National Ballet of Marseille under the direction of the collective (LA)HORDE. In Room With A View, the collective examines the body’s emancipatory power in a troubled political and environmental context, as we face the collapse of biodiversity and all living things, and challenge oppressive systems. A cohesive force in dance, magnified by the power of music and the energy carried by the body. Referring to the choreographic material of the piece and to the current pandemic context, within which human relationships are stretched thin, Dovydas invites you to see dance as a vessel for cohesion and collective mobilisation. How do we put up a united front and question our own physicality in a unifying and freeing energy?

NEEDCOMPANY: SUNG-IM HER

NEEDCOMPANY: SUNG-IM HER

The “Moving cloud” class draws from Sung-Im Her’s personal movement research, bringing together her experience of yoga and contemporary dance, focused on release technique and somatic practices. The focus will be set on the act of landing and listening through both moving and being still. The playful and open class will consist of explorations, using improvisation, as well as set material, from Grace Ellen Barkey’s work for the piece “PIE (PROBABILITIES OF INDEPENDENT EVENTS)”. A strong emphasis will be placed on musicality within the body and floor, a partnership to aid transferring, shifting and finding the momentum of weight with an ease of connection through the limbs. Sung-Im has a Masters in contemporary dance from the Han-Sung University and studied Choreography at P.A.R.T.S., Belgium. She has worked with Jan Fabre, Les ballets C de la B, Alias and Abattoire Ferme. As a choreographer, she has created more than 15 interdisciplinary performance pieces.

TANZFLUG / MIRJAM GURTNER: MIRJAM GURTNER

TANZFLUG / MIRJAM GURTNER: MIRJAM GURTNER

Mirjam Gurtner’s artistic practice finds its identity within improvisation, instant composition and the correlation between sensory perception and physicality. Her work seeks an inclusive and intercultural exchange. In 2021 Mirjam received the June Johnson Newcomer Prize from the Swiss Performing Arts Awards.

This workshop deals with instant composition and looks at the principles of martial arts as a starting point for creating movement. In this interplay between intuition and composition, participants challenge their own movement vocabulary and develop an inclusive language. The movement research around Almost Home provides insights into the artistic practice and creation of the piece. The workshop is designed for professional dancers with or without  disabilities, as well as for disable performers who already have some stage experience. Dance artists of all ages and from all sectors of society are welcome.

ANNIE HANAUER / LAC / TEATRO DANZABILE: EMANUEL ROSENBERG AND DANIELE ZANELLA

Emanuel Rosenberg directs the Inclusive dance theatre company Teatro Danzabile in Ticino since 2010. Trained at the Accademia Dimitri, Emanuel works as both a performer and director/choreographer. He plays with saying that he stages dancers and choreographs actors, rather than the other way around. He happily moves through the unknown – “out of his comfort zone”. Engaging with the diversity of people and their many means of expression is an integral part of his work. In this workshop, Emanuel is joined by Daniele Zanella, who has been his artistic partner at Teatro Danzabile for many years. Together, they will share insights into their inclusive artistic practice. This intuitive workshop is accessible to people with or without professional stage experience.

CIE. LA RONDE: SARAFINA BECK

CIE. LA RONDE: SARAFINA BECK

Sarafina Beck is a Zurich-based dance artist, active as freelance dancer and choreographer. She regularly works with Company MEK, directed by Muhammed Kaltuk. Her movement forms arise in the process of drawing an aesthetic out of a theme. She searches for the origin of a movement within the emotions she is willing to express. In this masterclass, Cie. La Ronde’s powerhouse company dancer Sarafina guides dancers through a series of tasks, based on the work “8”. With her warm-up, Sarafina leads the dancers through a process of connecting and communicating with their bodies to reach a comfortable state of expression and execution. In the next phase, dancers are introduced to the body language and movement approach of her character in the work “8” and learn some repertoire. Dynamic, raw, urban, powerful!
