Sometimes it is individual people who can make a big difference: in the New Zealand dance scene, Shona McCullagh is such an inspiring figure. She is the artistic director of the New Zealand Dance Company, which she co-founded in 2012, and which offers contemporary choreographers of the country an important, highly professional structure for new creations. Now, her versatile dancers from Auckland are visiting Switzerland for the first time on the occasion of this year’s Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps. For European audiences this encounter is especially interesting, as the choreographers who have been chosen for the production «Time» have by and large evolved their skills independently from the Western European dance scene. In «Matter», Ross McCormack creates a surreal place in the middle of nowhere and ironically questions the human obsession with order. With powerful, martial arts-like movements, Kim Jae-Duk from South Korea creates a field of tension featuring meditation and attack. For «The Fibonacci» Victoria Columbus has drawn inspiration from the mathematical sequence of the same name. «Time» represents the company’s vision to touch and enthuse more and more people with the many faces of contemporary dance.
