Mourad Merzouki, an internationally successful hip hop artist, has always been confronted with questions about his identity, his environment, his cultural imprint and his life as a dancer and choreographer. «We have had difficult experiences with racism, rejection and exclusion», says Merzouki, a son of Algerian immigrants. «But I have always been very lucky to have a profession which involves bringing people together.» The Cie. Käfig, last seen at Migros Kulturprozent Tanzfestival Steps in 2014, now presents «Cartes Blanches». On the occasion of the company’s 20th anniversary in 2016, Merzouki gathered people who have had a significant influence on the ensemble over the years. He has reviewed the company’s past two decades from a number of angles, his dancers shedding light on joint collaborations, successes and even disagreements. «Cartes Blanches» is a fast-paced, at times poetic mixture, which does not shy away from moments of melancholy. The sofas, chairs and carpets on stage create a relaxed living room ambiance. Yet the all-male ensemble increasingly misuses the stage set in a host of different ways. This is a pacy, turbulent and extremely cool hip hop spectacle which fulfils all expectations.

Mourad Merzouki

Mourad Merzouki was born in 1973 in Lyon, a son of Algerian parents. His background is in acrobatics and hip hop, the latter becoming popular in France in the 80s. In 1989, the dancer and choreographer co-founded Accrorap. In 1994, the company presented «Athina» at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon and successfully helped to establish hip hop street dancing on stage. In 1996, he founded the internationally successful Cie. Käfig. In 2009, he was appointed director of the Centre Choréographique National de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne. Picture: Bojan Stoilkovski
