Dance arrives from Down Under at the Migros-Kulturprozent’s „Steps“ Dance Festival. For more than 20 years, Garry Stewart has directed Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) and has successfully shared his country’s culture through independent, often interdisciplinary, works around the world. His creations deliberately refer to Australia’s origins, recognising Aborigines as the traditional owners of the land and engaging in a lively exchange with them. In the case of this production, the language of the Kaurna from the Adelaide Plains forms the basis for the sound collage. Music and choreography explore rhythms that shape or deeply determine us, as the heart beat does. From grey nothingness a calm, pulsating dance emerges, increasingly inhabiting more space as it expands and gains colour. The slightest movements, virtuoso solos and group scenes compose tableaux which let us instinctively feel the great cycles of becoming and passing away, of growth and decay. The artistic refinement and powerful energy of the dancers are never an end in themselves, but allow for a panoply of images, ranging from delicate, sensitive allusions to almost animalistic savage outbursts. «The Beginning of Nature» is an impressive conglomeration of all the arts which takes the audience on a hypnotic journey to the origins of all being.
