Dance is reconquering the stages! You can look forward to some highlights in contemporary dance starting this autumn. Four different but equally inspiring co-productions from our cancelled festival edition 2020 are set to tour Switzerland in the 2020/2021 theatre season.

We are very happy that the evening « I am who I am who I am » with pieces from the choreographers Caroline Finn, @ella_rothschild and @jasminemorand in coproduction with Tanz Luzerner Theater TLT finally meets its audience. Stay tuned!

LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD

Dear friends of Steps,
We started planning our 17th edition more than two years ago. Throughout our search for surprising and inspiring dance productions from all over the world, in the conversations with our partner theatres in all four corners of Switzerland and while putting the final touches - both big and small - to the tours, we always looked forward to the magical, irreplaceable energy that connects the audience and the dancers during a performance.

Last Saturday would have marked the end of our festival; a program featuring 24 unique choreographic voices from around the globe, its variety and diversity reflecting not only the world of international dance, but also the society in which we live.

Theatres are closed until further notice, and our society is keeping a safe distance. Full of confidence that dance will reconquer the stages in all its vigor, we are looking to the future – and want to take you with us. The four coproductions from the current edition are set to be showcased in selected Swiss theatres in the season 20/21. We are already looking forward to Compagnie Tabea Martin's premiere of

The dancers and choreographers Maya Jilan Dong, Dickson Mbi and Rianto, gathered for the evening entitled

The french choreographer Mourad Merzouki and Cie Käfig will not be presenting their

Dance in virtual space, we agree, does not offer the same emotional experience as dance experienced physically. But the choreographer Anton Lachky, although he also makes this observation, does not allow himself to be constrained by events. Follow his company's page and let yourself be guided!

Today is International Dance Day!

We were hoping to celebrate the day together with Steps stage performances all across Switzerland – but now we are all stuck at home. So that's why we are bringing the message from this year's International Dance Day to you on a different way.

Author of the message is Gregory Magoma, who also featured on the 2020 Steps program: The dancer and choreographer from Johannesburg has created the enthralling, socio-critical piece „Via Kanana“ for Via Katlehong. During times in which many artists are out of work and theatres and stages have closed their doors, questions on the identity of dance are more necessary than ever – something which Gregory Maqoma has also been actively reflecting on:

Today should start the tour of Compagnie Tabea Martin’s new production

With stages and rehearsal stages closed, dancers are currently working from home – an agile working space that leads, through halls, doors and stairs, to gardens and back.
In the digital sphere, we are seeing a myriad of wonderful insights into dance created by artists in their own home – and receiving invitations to join in. Together with newly available recordings of renowned productions and interviews, contemporary dance is currently being exhibited online – in its ever changeable diversity and internationality – as the symbol of our times we know it to be. The Steps team has taken a look around to discover what is on offer.

Tonight would have been the official opening of the 17th edition of the Migros Cultural Percentage Dance Festival Steps. We would have been hugging each other and looking forward to three weeks of stunning performances, world premieres and wonderful artists. For reasons known to all, the festival had to be cancelled. This leaves us deeply sad. We were very impatient to let you discover the works of the 12 magnificent companies of this edition and their personal responses to the festival theme of

Due to current developments and the new regulations of the Swiss Federal Council, the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps will not take place from 23rd April to 16th May 2020 – for the protection of the audience, cultural workers, employees and festival partners as well as the general population.

In these challenging times, we would like to express our sincere thanks to our 38 partner theatres, who unanimously supported the decision. We would have been delighted to present all the outstanding artists of this year's edition.

Support for Swiss cultural creation is particularly important today. In these difficult times, the Migros Culture Percentage remains true to its commitment to the Swiss dance scene.
