Dance, speak!
The international language of dance
In cultural circles, the opinion is that dance is one single, international language. Understandable over all language barriers and cultures. It sounds good and suggests the utopia of a worldwide community without communication difficulties. The divine punishment of Babel appears to have been overcome. But is dance really a language? And when it is, what about the wide variety of expressions and interpretations?
What happens when different dance languages meet? Do they affect each other? What experiences do the different cultures have with their own dance inheritances and their own histories? In a globalised environment, will they become a self-service shop for what the globalised culture and festival markets call "contemporary dance"?
The subject of language in dance touches the core of artistic creativeness. At the symposium, dance professionals from Switzerland and abroad hold discussions with choreographers, organisers, cultural intermediaries and cultural sponsors. Participation is free of charge. The Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps makes the decision about who participates.
Lectures, presentations, discussions, open space...
The symposium offers a wide variety of different forms and methods, enabling optimal enjoyment with a high learning effect and a large proportion of time available to develop new contacts. In addition, the participants have the opportunity to introduce subjects and questions which are on their minds and to which they would like to hear opinions and suggestions from the wide circle of participants which includes artists, scientists and organisers. - Take part yourself!
