Women in dance – pioneers and personalities

The pioneers of modern dance in the 20th century were almost exclusively female. Complementary to the main focal theme «Femininity in choreography», the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps presents a eight-part film programme on the history of women in dance. The programmes are organised under four subjects: Avant-garde, dance theatre, pioneers and exotics.

To be seen are:
–– Mary Wigman and Martha Graham
–– Valeska Gert (by Volker Schlöndorff) or Anita Berber (by Rosa von Praunheim with Lotti Huber)
–– Works of famous filmmakers such as Chantal Akerman
–– Dance theatre by Pina Bausch
–– The exotics Josephine Baker and Jin Xing
–– Films referring to the Steps stage programme (Lucinda Childs, La La La Human Steps, Sylvie Guillem)
