Milestones in the history of dance

José Limón´s work is part of the history of dance. His choreography work from the middle of the 20th century is pioneering as regards technique and dramatic art. His sensuous and exciting work is practically unknown in Switzerland. The work of the master can now finally be discovered during Steps#12.
José Limón is one of the great pioneers of contemporary dance. Steps presents three jewels of the Mexican-born choreographer, including « The Moor’s Pavane» and «There is a time».
«The Moor’s Pavane»: Limón´s choreography to Shakespeare’s Othello can hardly be surpassed as regards drama and sensuality, despite of its crystal-clear structure. Based on the four characters, Othello, Iago, Desdemona and Emilia, Limón created the drama about jealousy and death in 1949. Purcell´s Renaissance music gives the piece enormous dynamics and becomes the centerpiece of the action.

«There is a time» was produced in1956. Limón´s choreography and his twelve dancers closely and movingly expose the subject that there is a right time for any action.

José Limón has brought influential dance techniques and a choreographic works embodying a deep sense of humanity to American Modern Dance. The Mexican-born choreographer and his mentor Doris Humphrey are regarded as protagonists of contemporary dance and are mentioned in the same breath as Martha Graham or Merce Cunningham.
